Konami have revealed that Winning Eleven 9 is due to be released on August 4th in Japan. The game, that will form the foundations for what will be known as Pro Evolution Soccer 5 in PAL territories, is the latest in the franchise that's generally regarded as the greatest series of football games created. And PALGN will happily agree with that verdict.

And whilst Konami have refused to budge on a European or Australian release date (if we were betting men, we'd say October if past years were anything to go by), we've been assured the game will definitely be appearing on PS2, Xbox and PC. And as you'd expect, there's significant changes afoot for all three versions.

Biggest of all the modifications is the inclusion of online play. The European version of Xbox Live had online play of course, and the PC also to a limited extent, but this is the first time PS2 owners outside Japan will be able to sample the joy that is online PES. There's some other tweaks as well; the introduction of wing-backs will mean we'll be able to indulge in some Ashley Cole-esque charges down the flanks, and the players will look damn fine doing it as well, thanks to an overhaul of the basic player animation. We'll even be able to see the breath of players hanging in the cold air. See, we said significant changes didn't we? The Master League will give the player 'more precise control over player growth' this time as well, whatever that means.

In other PES news, Konami have signed up the square-jawed Chelsea and England defender John Terry for the front of the Pro Evolution Soccer 5 box, who gushed, 'I've been a massive fan of Pro Evolution Soccer for years now and am really pleased to be able to work with the talented people behind such a fantastic game'. Yea, whatever, just take your money and go John, there's a good lad.
