Residents in Yishun received 1,000kg in free Musang King durians as part of  on Jul. 2.

Each resident was entitled to one durian, with priority given to Pioneer and Merdeka Generation residents, and blue/orange CHAS card holders.

Queues began forming as early as around 3:30pm — a full three hours before the event was due to start at 6:30pm.

Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, who is Member of Parliament for Chong Pang, also made an appearance.

He said that the durian giveaways are something the branch has been doing "more recently".

"Everyone loves durians, or most Singaporeans love durians. So there is a lot of interest," he said.

He also posed for photos with residents.

The durians were sponsored by a durian shop in Yishun, Famous Durian at Blk 848 Yishun Street 81.

Most of the residents that Mothership spoke to said they would share the goods with their family members.

One durian lover, however, proclaimed she would eat the whole durian herself.

She learnt about the event through a friend, and decided to queue for the free fruit.

"I like durian very much!" she declared.
