ram, cpu & harddisk performance depriciate over time. my condolences to your lappy.

I'm no pc expert, but I believe you have too much unwanted programmes, just go to 'Control Panel', click 'Add or remove programs and windows components' and remove those programs that you haven't used for a long time.

They take up too much space and put a strain on the ram.

To check how much ram you have, click 'start' after you have booted up your laptop, right click on 'My Computer', and then click 'Properties'. See how much ram is installed on your laptop. If it's below 1GHz. then you should replaced it, preferably with 2GHz or more.

Nowadays laptop ram is quite cheap, just go to Sim Lim Square, the higher floor the better and bring your laptop with you. Any shop selling pc stuff can help you replace the ram.

I hope the above can help.

Please take care, will you?

Smile

defrag is good. but if you do it everyday. it'll reduce your harddrive life. i suggest you to change your harddrive. maybe the disk plate is damaged. maybe it'll fasten your laptop. about defrag. do it once every 3 months. should be enough. Have a nice day! Wink

What do you mainly use the notebook for ? If just for surfing the web, I suggest to install Ubuntu as the Operating System... Ubuntu works miracle in older notebooks...

5 years old pc, you are probably using pentium 4 / dual core 1.8 GHz... Still good for running and basic uses... Not good for games though... 5 years ago, pcs are usually shipped with 1Gb RAM... So it should be good enough...

Consider getting an external HDD to store your files...

Storage as they get bigger will slow down the pc... If you are interested in learning how to reduce boot up time, let me know... It is a little complicated process...

Man, don't keep persuading people to jump ship to Linux.
Not everyone can adapt well in Linux. Things are totally different when it comes to users who jumped ship from a not-so-steady-but-super-easy Windows to super-steady-but-hard Linux. They've to start from ground up in order to get familiar.
I must say WINE is good, but not perfect yet.

For those who're looking for stability and security, go for Linux.
Those who want software compatibility and eye candiness, go for Windows.

FAQ by Tipster Legend™.

Q1: What's contribution?
A1: Only posting of tips is counted as. Other forms of contribution is not accepted, and are counted as void and null.

Q2: How to turn forum members into coward?
A2: You block them! When they've no way to defend themselves, they're coward!

Q3: How to win a debate/argument?
A3: There are many ways in fact. You can assemble keyboard warriors or SJWs to defend yourself. You can even create multiple dupes to 'blind' the members that you in fact have a lot of defenders.

Q4: I won 1 and lost 4 matches. What should I do?
A4: You're encouraged to celebrate your win and ignore the 4 losses. Nobody will harp on it even if you lost overall. Make sure you celebrate like wild!

Q5: What's the worst, most useless and meaningless suggestion did a forum ever receive?
A5: Disable post replies. WIN!

lol, not persuading la... just giving them an alternative... I am like the devil's advocate... I prefer to give people options than to force them Playful

But I agree with what you say : For those who're looking for stability and security, go for Linux.
Those who want software compatibility and eye candiness, go for Windows.

Sometimes, the more alternative human beings have, the more confused they are.
So stick to 1 is better in this kind of situation.
